about

These recordings are based around live improvisations, recorded in various places around Europe. Computer generated music tends to have an ethereal, other-worldly quality due to it's production being often based on synthesised sound sources rather than recordings. This is all well and good and certainly works for many, many records. With this album though, I wanted to make something not rooted in that sound, which is the reasoning behind everything having been recorded to tape first. This is also the reason behind releasing it on tape cassette - I wanted it to be in a medium that reflects the aesthetics of the album, a medium with a much more physical process and interaction behind it. I like to think that the album sounds like the various spaces it was recorded in - sometimes cavernous concrete galleries, sometimes tiny dark-lit wooden-ceilinged lofts. The arrangements are more long-form and more minimal than previous Lumbers releases, and my interests while improvising were based on resonant frequencies, cyclical movements and organic/analog sound sources. Most tracks are a mix of different microphones in different parts of the room they were recording, treating the room itself as the sound source.
